Hardware, tech, and gadgets
- Audio interface: Behringer Uphoria UMC202
- Cameras: Olypmus mju-ii (analogue) & Sony A57 (digital) with a small assortment of lenses. I mostly use Kodak Gold film, partially for cash reasons
- Headphones: Sony WH1000XM5 & sometimes wired earbuds - depends on use case. Looking to get some more studio-friendly headphones in the future
- Keyboard & mouse: ZSA Moonlander & MX Master 3 (the greatest mouse of all time)
- Music player: Ipod mini 2G & Ipod classic 6, both running Rockbox
- PC: ThinkPad L14 Gen 2 (i3-1115G4, integrated, 8gb, 256gb)
- Phone: Usually FP4 with stock, but currently Galaxy A17 while waiting for a repair
- Speakers: KRK Rokit 5
- Video game consoles: Jailbroken 3DS & yet-to-be-jailbroken Nintendo Switch
Software
- Cloud service: Nextcloud through Hetzner
- Computer OS: Gentoo Linux running GNOME with systemd. Shoutout to Freedesktop for making my computer useable and Flatpak for software not in gentoo repos
- Email and calendar provider: Proton (referral link)
- Homebrew, jailbreak, custom OSs etc.: Rockbox (my beloved) for my Ipods, a variety of software on my 3DSs (see 3ds.hacks.guide). I also would use PostmarketOS if viable, and recommend looking into ADB for Android modification
- Messaging services: Mainly Signal, but also discord, fb messenger (without facebook), whatsapp, and snapchat. I use Whatsapp Contact Adder to work around uploading all my contacts to Meta servers
- Mobile OS: Stock android with many layers of adb debloating
- Password manager: Bitwarden
Computer applications
- Browser: Firefox with many extensions and some hardened settings. I am looking for less AI-filled alternatives if you know of any!
- Cloud sync / backup: Nextcloud desktop client and git
- Image processing: RawTherapee with GIMP
- Media player: VLC for both video, and Strawberry for audio - I would use only VLC, but no gapless playback
- Musician specific applications: MuseScore Studio without MuseHub, Audacity, and Transcibe! (proprietary)
- Music metadata tagging: MusicBrainz Picard. I manage my audio library through folders.
- Office suite: LibreOffice
- Terminal: Foot for lightning speeds
- Text editing: Neovim and Obsidian (proprietary)
Mobile applications
- ADB: Strictly not a mobile one, but I wouldn't want android without it.
- App store: F-droid (main) and Aurora Store / Play Store if needed
- Computer integration: KDE Connnect (linux only)
- Document management: LibreOffice Viewier and MuPDF Mini. I don't edit documents on my phone, only view.
- Free software stock replacements: Fossify Camera works but lacks multi-lens and Heliboard as my keyboard.
- Gadget pairing: Gadgetbridge when I need, but usually I just don't use stuff that needs application configuration.
- Internet security: NetGuard allowing me to block internet access per application.
- Launcher: O-launcher Clutter Free - streamlined, ad-free, bs-free text based launcher. Lightning fast and looks great.
- Maps: CoMaps when I can, Google Maps if I have to
- Media: VLC and Phocid. I usually listen to music locally from other devices, but also have Spotify for music that I don't own.
- Musician practice tools: This tuner and this metronome. This audio recorder and Echo for on-the-fly recording/memos. I sometimes use Ireal Pro (nonfree).
- Other tools: Caffeinate to keep my screen on
- Videos: NewPipe for a pleasing, ad-free YouTube experience. For algorithmic recommendation, you can use it in combination with YouTube by finding a video you like and clicking Share > NewPipe.
- Web browsing: URLCheck paired with Fennec. I also disable all "Open link in App"-options since URLcheck handles that much better.
Instruments and accessories
- Amplifier: Gallien Krueger mb150s-ii bass amplifier
- Electric bass: Sire M2-5 that I've made passive and splitted the pickups of. Rotosound 77 flatwound strings.
- Keyboard/synth: Yamaha Reface DX
- Percussion: Handmade pandeiro from Dizzy, Contemporanea cuÃca with handmade skin, Caixixis & shakers from Marcos China, and Peter Erskine Ride drum sticks
- Upright bass: Alfred Stingl AS180b 3/4 with Obligatos, adjustable bridge, & realist copperhead
Browser extensions
- AdNauseum: Fork of uBlock origin that fights back
- Auto En Passant: iykyk
- Bitwarden: Password manager
- Block site: Helps with self control
- DeArrow: De-clickbaitifies YouTube
- Facebook container: Isolate all Meta-related cookies
- Firefox Multi-Account Containers: Same as above but customizeable. Also useful for managing sites with multiple accounts / cookie sessions.
- I still don't care about cookies: Auto-declines cookie popups
- Return YouTube Dislike
- Slop Evader: Adds options for searching for links published before ChatGPT was launched. If nothing else, a very cool gimmick to have in your browser
- SponsorBlock: Skip sponsored segments on YouTube
- Unhook: Customize your youtube home page / search results by removing what you don't want
- UserAgent Switcher: Access sites that don't allow Firefox
