I installed an e-reader on my 3DS

Today, I did a thing I never really thought I would do. I installed an e-reader on my 3ds1. Let me explain.

In my last two posts, I wrote a little about reading and wanting an e-reader. More specifically, a dedicated carryable device that I can read on which is not my phone or my computer. Originally this meant an e-ink tablet such at Kobos, (jailbroken) Kindles2, or the like. Even just proprietary-ness and ecological concerns with buying new devices etc. aside, this was somewhat sub-optimal due to, well, money.

So, by a whim I just realized that uhm, well, I have a 3DS don't I? And wouldn't it be kind of fun to just like- see if it's possible? And with the help of 3dslibris by Rodrigo Iglesias, it is!

I loaded it in through Universal Updater, loaded in some .epub-files with the help of my great friend Anna (she works with archiving, you should look her up), transferred them over to my 3DS via FTP and boom. Now I have a hand-sized, portable, library again which is separate from my phone and the inherent distractions that come with it.

Oh, by the way. Hack your 3ds. Free all your devices from the jail that your manufacturer has forced onto them. It is so worth it.

  2. No way in hell I'm using a non jailbroken one. You mean I pay for your product and still get served ads???? Nuh-uh.
